Vice‑presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), former Kano governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, dismissed Ali Modu Sheriff’s claim that the NDC’s alliance with presidential hopeful Peter Obi would struggle to win support in Kano and the northern region. Speaking to Channels Television on Monday, Kwankwaso asserted that his political influence in Kano is well‑known and that opponents can verify it.
Kwankwaso suggested Sheriff was merely trying to gain favor with President Bola Tinubu, saying, “My humble self, Ali Modu Sheriff and his friend Bola Tinubu were all in the APC. We know ourselves very well… He just wanted to impress our brother in the Villa, to convince him that he’s working.” He added that he welcomes attempts to underestimate him, viewing them as politically advantageous.
The former governor expressed confidence that neither Kano nor the broader north would abandon the NDC‑Obi partnership. He recalled that Obi secured more than two million votes in the northern states during the last election, describing the figure as “huge” and noting that many of those voters remain loyal.
Kwankwaso concluded that the combination of the Kwankwasiyya movement with Obi’s supporters is set to reshape the political landscape ahead of the 2027 polls, especially among young voters who are less swayed by the narratives promoted by Sheriff and others.
