Opposition parties have condemned the Federal Government following the arraignment of a young Nigerian who was accused of calling for a military takeover.
The youth, whose name has not been officially disclosed, was reportedly brought before a court earlier in the week over comments he made online that authorities interpreted as inciting a coup. His arrest and prosecution have since sparked a wave of criticism from political groups and civic activists.
According to several opposition leaders, the government’s move reflects a growing intolerance for dissenting voices. They argue that while reckless statements should be discouraged, prosecuting a young citizen for expressing frustration sends the wrong message in a democratic system.
One party spokesperson described the development as “a dangerous pattern,” warning that it could lead to a broader clampdown on citizens who express controversial or unpopular opinions.
Civil society organizations have also joined the outcry, insisting that the government should focus on addressing the root causes of public dissatisfaction rather than criminalizing expressions of anger.
However, government officials have defended their actions, claiming that national security must be protected and that calls—direct or indirect—for military intervention cannot be taken lightly.
