The Tanzania Immigration Services Department announced that holders of Nigerian passports are no longer placed in the referred visa category, effective immediately after the amendments were published in Government Gazette No. 246 of 2026 and a public notice dated 25 September 2026.
Nigerian travelers will now use the country’s regular visa application system, submitting requests through Tanzania’s official online immigration portal without the extra referral clearance that was previously required.
The updated procedure also permits applicants to use designated entry points where appropriate. Under the former system, Nigerians had to obtain prior approval and submit applications at least two months before travel. The change was communicated by the department’s chief spokesperson, ACI Paul J. Mselle, and it does not eliminate the need for a visa where one is mandated.
