In a Vibe Q interview published on July 31, 2026, Nigerian Afrobeats star Davido said he deliberately concealed his father’s support during his formative studio sessions, wanting his own ability to be the focus rather than his family background.
He told the outlet that he feared people would treat him differently if they knew his father was backing his music, so he “used to deny my dad whenever I went to the studio down our street.” Davido added that his aim was for listeners to judge him solely on his talent.
Davido also disclosed that his father invested heavily in his early career, constructing a home‑based studio that cost more than $100,000. While still attending school, he would travel home each weekend to record and develop his songs in that facility.
According to the artist, keeping his father’s role hidden eventually worked in his favor, as the public later came to recognize his genuine musical skill. He concluded that the decision to stay low‑key “paid off—now they know I was genuinely good at music.”
