Manchester United return to the Champions League at Old Trafford on Thursday, where Azerbaijani champions Sabah provide the opposition at 8pm. United are back in the competition for the first time since 2023-24, while the visitors are preparing for their first appearance in the league phase of any UEFA tournament.

The match will be Manchester United’s 300th European Cup fixture, making them the first English club to reach the milestone. This is their 26th appearance in the Champions League proper, more than any other English side.
Their recent record in the competition offers less encouragement. United have won one of their last seven group-stage or league-phase matches, drawing two and losing four. They finished bottom of their group during their previous appearance.
Michael Carrick’s side have taken four points from their opening three Premier League matches. A 2-0 defeat at Hull was followed by a 5-2 home victory over Ipswich and a 2-2 draw at Everton.
