Ruben Amorim reignites clash with Manchester United legends Rooney and Scholes

Ruben Amorim, now in charge of AC Milan, has appeared to revive a dispute with former Manchester United stars after comments that seemed to target the critics who judged his tenure at Old Trafford. His spell at United ended in January after just 14 months, a period that saw the club finish 15th in the Premier League and lose the Europa League final to Tottenham.

During his time at United, the Portuguese manager faced regular criticism from ex‑players. Wayne Rooney labelled some of Amorim’s press briefings “very confusing”, Paul Scholes doubted whether he truly understood the club, and Gary Neville also voiced strong disapproval of United’s performances. Amorim departed with a 38.1 % win rate, the lowest for any United manager since Sir Alex Ferguson.

Now speaking as Milan’s boss, Amorim was asked whether former Rossoneri legends would grant him patience. He replied that he had previously worked at a club “full of legends” whose opinions were loud and rooted in a different era, but stressed that his current priority is to make his players grasp the responsibility of representing the Italian giants. In his first three Serie A games with Milan he recorded two victories and a draw, the latest being a 1‑1 stalemate with Juventus after conceding a late equaliser, a performance that drew criticism for a lack of attacking threat.

Amorim underlined that building a successful side requires time, adding that the amount of patience he receives depends on the club’s results. He cited Arsenal, Juventus and Inter as examples of teams that needed time to become consistent winners, noting, “To buy time, we have to win on Saturday. By winning, we will have more time to build our project.” He also addressed an earlier analogy comparing a mistake to an airplane accident, quickly acknowledging it was unsuitable and explaining that any error provides information that can be used in training sessions.
