A university student known on X as @opes_aura recounted that, while in her first year, she accidentally recharged her phone with ₦100,000 instead of ₦1,000. The mistake left her so distressed that she thought about ending her life, but a classmate suggested she visit an MTN outlet to try reversing the charge.
On her way to the network office, her mother called unexpectedly to tell her where she had left the house key. When she reached MTN, staff informed her that the transaction could not be undone because a call had already been placed from the SIM, leaving her feeling hopeless.
The following day she turned the situation around by beginning to sell airtime and data to fellow students and online contacts. A buyer soon asked her to top up a Wi‑Fi connection for ₦60,000, and despite offering discounts, she eventually recouped more than ₦80,000 of the lost money.
She also said the episode taught her to double‑check figures, now putting on glasses to count the zeros correctly before entering her bank PIN.
