Oyo Muslim Leaders Condemn Kidnappers’ Sharia Demand, Declare Support for Rule of Law

Muslim leaders in Oyo State have reportedly distanced themselves from demands allegedly made by kidnappers calling for the implementation of Sharia law, insisting that criminal activities should not be linked to religion.

The reaction follows reports surrounding a recent abduction incident in the state, during which the perpetrators were said to have issued demands that included the adoption of Sharia law. The development sparked concern among residents and prompted responses from religious and community leaders.

Speaking on the matter, Muslim stakeholders emphasized that Islam does not support kidnapping, violence, or the use of force to achieve political or religious objectives. They maintained that individuals involved in criminal acts should be treated as criminals rather than representatives of any faith.

The leaders also stressed that Nigeria remains a constitutional democracy governed by established laws and institutions. According to them, any discussion about legal or political systems must take place through lawful and democratic processes rather than through threats or acts of violence.

The statement has been welcomed by many residents, who view it as an important step toward preventing religious tension and promoting unity within the state. Community leaders have urged citizens to remain calm and avoid narratives that could create division among different religious groups.

Security experts have noted that criminal gangs sometimes attempt to cloak their activities in ideological or religious language to gain attention or justify their actions. However, analysts argue that such claims should not distract from the need to address the underlying security challenges facing affected communities.

Meanwhile, authorities continue efforts to combat kidnapping and other forms of insecurity across the region. Residents have also been encouraged to cooperate with security agencies by providing credible information that could assist ongoing investigations.

As discussions continue, religious leaders have reiterated their commitment to peaceful coexistence, national unity, and the rule of law, while calling for stronger measures to protect lives and property throughout the state.
