Just In: Court Grants Nnamdi Kanu Final Opportunity to Defend Himself
A Federal High Court in Abuja has given IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu a final opportunity to present his defense in his ongoing treasonable felony case.
Court Gives Nnamdi Kanu Final Chance to Defend Himself
The Federal High Court in Abuja has granted the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, a final opportunity to open his defense in the ongoing treasonable felony trial filed against him by the Federal Government.
The presiding judge, Justice Binta Nyako, gave the ruling on Tuesday, stressing that the court would no longer entertain unnecessary delays or adjournments from either party.
According to the judge, the defense counsel has been given ample time to prepare and must now proceed with the case on the next adjourned date.
“This will be the last chance granted to the defendant to present his case. The court will not grant any further adjournments,” Justice Nyako ruled firmly.
Background of the Case
Nnamdi Kanu, leader of IPOB, has been facing multiple charges, including treasonable felony and terrorism-related offenses, following his arrest and extradition to Nigeria in 2021.
The case, which has dragged on for years, has witnessed numerous adjournments and legal battles between the defense and prosecution over trial procedures and Kanu’s detention conditions.
His legal team has consistently maintained that he deserves fair hearing and access to his lawyers while in custody.
Reactions from IPOB Supporters
Shortly after the court session, several IPOB supporters took to social media, expressing mixed reactions over the ruling.
While some viewed it as a fair directive to ensure progress in the trial, others accused the judiciary of bias, insisting that Kanu should be released unconditionally.
Security presence around the court premises was reportedly heavy, with personnel from the Department of State Services (DSS) and Nigeria Police Force maintaining strict order during the proceedings.
Next Court Sitting
The case has been adjourned to December 10, 2025, for continuation of hearing, during which Kanu is expected to take the witness stand or present witnesses in his defense.
