Wike Accuses Opposition of Fueling Trump’s Anti-Nigeria Remarks
Wike’s remarks add to the growing number of voices accusing political opponents of using foreign influence to undermine the government ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has alleged that the opposition parties are behind the recent threats made by former U.S. President Donald Trump against Nigeria, describing the move as a deliberate attempt to discredit President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Speaking to journalists in Abuja on Tuesday, Wike said it was “obvious that elements within the opposition are sponsoring international smear campaigns” to create tension and portray Nigeria negatively on the global stage.
“The opposition is desperate. They have gone as far as using foreign politicians like Trump to spread fear and division. But Nigerians can see through their lies,” Wike stated.
“Nigeria Will Not Be Intimidated” — Wike
Wike maintained that the federal government remains focused on delivering good governance and improving security, regardless of foreign or local distractions.
He noted that such threats “hold no real weight,” emphasizing that the Tinubu-led government will continue to strengthen diplomatic relations with all nations, including the United States.
“Nigeria is a sovereign country. No one can threaten our peace or dictate how we run our affairs,” he added.
Background: Trump’s Controversial Remarks
Former U.S. President Donald Trump recently caused outrage when he reportedly threatened to take military action in Nigeria, citing alleged concerns over human rights and corruption.
His comments have since drawn sharp reactions from Nigerian leaders and the international community, with many describing them as reckless and unprovoked.
Wike’s remarks add to the growing number of voices accusing political opponents of using foreign influence to undermine the government ahead of the 2027 general elections.
