The Nigerian film and theatre industry has been thrown into mourning following the death of veteran Nollywood actor and scholar Kola Oyewo, who passed away at the age of 80. Reports of his death emerged on June 12, with tributes pouring in from colleagues, fans, and cultural figures across the country.
The news was first announced by actor Kunle Afod, who paid tribute to the late screen icon, describing him as a remarkable talent whose contributions to Nigerian theatre and film would never be forgotten.
Born on March 27, 1946, in Osun State, Kola Oyewo began his acting journey in 1964 with the Oyin Adejobi Theatre Group before becoming one of the most respected figures in Yoruba theatre and Nollywood. He was widely celebrated for his portrayal of Odewale in the classic stage play The Gods Are Not to Blame and featured in notable productions including Saworoide, Sango, Koseegbe, and Super Story.
Beyond acting, Oyewo built an impressive academic career as a theatre scholar and lecturer, mentoring generations of students and contributing significantly to the development of performing arts in Nigeria.
His passing marks the end of an era for Nigerian entertainment, with many describing him as one of the foundational figures who helped shape modern Yoruba theatre and Nollywood. Tributes continue to pour in as colleagues and admirers celebrate a life dedicated to the arts.
