Nigerian woman says locals, not Tinubu, drove Uber out of the country

Uber announced it would cease operations in Nigeria on 2 September 2026, ending a 12‑year presence. In a video posted online, a Nigerian lady argued that the company’s exit should not be blamed on President Bola Tinubu or the government, but on Nigerians themselves.

She claimed that the behaviour of some riders and drivers contributed to Uber’s problems, noting that certain drivers try to take passengers off the app and charge fares higher than the amount shown. As an illustration, she said a ride displayed as ₦10,000 on the app might be demanded for ₦20,000 in cash.

The woman also said she finds Uber relatively affordable compared with rival ride‑hailing services, although she acknowledged that inDrive can sometimes be slightly cheaper. She praised Uber drivers for being more professional than those on other platforms.

While she maintained that the government had no role in the withdrawal, Uber said its decision resulted from a review of its business operations and shifting investment priorities, a move limited to Nigeria and Uganda and not indicative of a wider pull‑out from Sub‑Saharan Africa.
