Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has described Democracy Day as a powerful symbol of Nigeria’s democratic journey, stressing that June 12 is far more than a date on the national calendar.
In a message commemorating Democracy Day, Obi reflected on the significance of June 12 in Nigeria’s political history, noting that the day represents the sacrifices, courage, and determination of citizens who fought for democratic governance and the protection of civil liberties.
According to him, the occasion serves as a reminder of the struggles endured by many Nigerians in pursuit of justice, freedom, and accountable leadership. He emphasized that democracy should not be viewed merely as an annual celebration but as an ongoing commitment to nation-building and responsible governance.
Obi stated that the principles associated with June 12 continue to inspire Nigerians to work toward a country where democratic institutions are strengthened, citizens’ rights are protected, and public resources are managed in the interest of the people.
The former Anambra State governor also urged leaders at all levels to remain committed to transparency, accountability, and policies that improve the welfare of citizens. He stressed that the true meaning of democracy is reflected not only in elections but also in the quality of life experienced by the people.
His remarks come as Nigerians mark another Democracy Day amid discussions about governance, economic reforms, security challenges, and national development.
June 12 holds a special place in Nigeria’s democratic history as it commemorates the 1993 presidential election, widely regarded as one of the freest and fairest elections in the country’s history. The date has since become a symbol of democratic resilience and the quest for representative government.
Obi’s statement has attracted reactions from supporters and political observers, many of whom agree that Democracy Day provides an opportunity to reflect on the nation’s progress and the work that remains to be done.
As celebrations continue across the country, the former presidential candidate called on Nigerians to uphold democratic values and remain active participants in shaping the nation’s future.
