United States President Donald Trump sent a letter dated July 6, 2026, in which he lauded President Bola Tinubu’s decisive leadership in confronting terrorism and insecurity in Nigeria, particularly attacks aimed at Christian communities. The correspondence was released on Wednesday through a statement from the Nigerian Presidency via Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
In the letter, titled “President Trump Lauds President Tinubu’s Decisive Leadership Against Terrorists,” Trump thanked Tinubu for his thoughtful communication, commended his resolve to address national violence, and expressed honor in standing with him to fight terrorists and strengthen Nigeria’s prosperity.
Trump highlighted the importance of the United States‑Nigeria partnership, citing the 2026 Defence Cooperation Roadmap as a framework for joint counter‑terrorism efforts. He noted that U.S. Special Operations Forces have been deployed to train Nigerian troops, providing skills, tools and intelligence to protect the country’s citizens, especially those of faith under attack, and said he looks forward to continued discussions throughout his presidency.
The Nigerian Presidency added that security cooperation has deepened through a Joint Working Group led by the two nations’ national security advisers, focusing on intelligence sharing, military training and joint operations. It pointed to a May 16 raid in the Lake Chad region that targeted ISIS hideouts and resulted in the death of leader Abubakar Al‑Minoki and several lieutenants. The statement also mentioned that U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Africa Frank Garcia visited Abuja last week, meeting senior officials and pledging to expand collaboration on security and other strategic matters.
