Chris Spatola, a 47‑year‑old analyst for ESPN’s college basketball coverage and former starting guard at the United States Military Academy, died suddenly on Monday.
The network said his insight was shaped by his time as a student‑athlete, Army veteran, coach and broadcaster, noting his intelligence, preparation and enthusiasm earned him respect from colleagues, coaches, players and fans.
Spatola began working for ESPN in 2015, offering analysis during games and studio shows. At West Point he started all four years, led the team in scoring for three seasons and finished tenth on the academy’s all‑time scoring list with 1,543 points. He served on active duty from 2002 to 2007, deployed for Operation Iraqi Freedom and was awarded the Joint Service Commendation Medal and the Army Commendation Medal for his performance and leadership.
After leaving the Army, he spent five years (2007‑2012) with Hall of Fame coach Mike Krzyzewski at Duke, helping the Blue Devils win the 2010 national title and four ACC tournament championships. He also acted as court coach for the United States squads that captured gold at the 2008 Olympics and the 2010 FIBA World Championship.
