Ayodele Fayose, who heads the Rural Electrification Agency and is a former governor of Ekiti, said the country’s growing population is linked to its chronic electricity problems, noting that inadequate power supply shapes how Nigerians spend their evenings.
Fayose argued that without reliable electricity, many people stay indoors after dark, limiting nightlife and outdoor recreation. He suggested that this lack of evening options leads couples to spend more time together, which he connected to higher birth rates.
“We need to address this issue of electricity in Nigeria. The people at that level have no alternative attraction. Nothing else matters to them after seven o’clock. It gets dark, and everybody is engaging their wives. And the population simply becomes double,” he said, adding that better power supply would create space for nightlife, businesses and other recreational activities.
His comments have reignited discussion about the necessity of dependable electricity and expanded leisure opportunities throughout Nigeria, as highlighted in a recent Instagram post shared by Ije‑Luv.
