Kebbi Schoolgirls’ Abduction: Defence Headquarters Summons, Grills Soldiers in Abuja

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has summoned and interrogated several soldiers in Abuja as part of ongoing investigations into the recent abduction of schoolgirls in Kebbi State, a security incident that has drawn nationwide outrage.

Sources within the military disclosed that the summoned personnel are being questioned over possible operational lapses, internal compromise, or communication failures that may have contributed to the successful attack on the school. The interrogation sessions, led by senior military intelligence officers, are said to be thorough and aimed at uncovering any gaps in the security structure around the affected community.

The abduction, which took place earlier in the week, saw armed bandits invade a girls’ school in the state, taking away dozens of students. The incident has intensified pressure on security agencies to strengthen school protection measures across vulnerable northern states.

According to reports, the DHQ’s decision to summon soldiers follows preliminary findings suggesting that certain units may not have responded swiftly to distress signals during the attack. While no soldier has been officially indicted, the Defence Headquarters is reportedly leaving no stone unturned in determining whether negligence or internal compromise played a role.

A senior military officer familiar with the investigation said the move is part of a broader effort to review and overhaul security protocols for schools, particularly those in high-risk areas.

The Federal Government has also been briefed on the ongoing interrogations, as parents and community leaders continue to call for urgent rescue efforts and greater military accountability.

Security analysts argue that the grilling of soldiers reflects a growing recognition that Nigeria’s battle against banditry requires stronger oversight, intelligence coordination, and early warning systems.

As rescue operations progress, the DHQ has assured the public that every effort is being made to locate the abducted students and bring the perpetrators to justice. More updates are expected in the coming days as investigations continue.
