The United States government has expressed strong concern over the recent wave of school abductions in Kebbi and Niger states, promising to support Nigeria with intelligence and surveillance information while urging immediate action to rescue the affected students.
The latest attacks—carried out by heavily armed bandits—saw dozens of students whisked away from their schools, triggering fresh fears across northern communities already battered by years of insecurity. Parents and residents have continued calling for urgent intervention as the attackers remain at large.
Speaking through an official statement, the U.S. Embassy in Nigeria condemned the abductions and described the incident as “deeply troubling,” stressing that the safety of children should never be negotiable. The embassy further confirmed that Washington is ready to share intelligence to aid Nigeria’s security agencies in tracking the perpetrators.
According to the U.S., Nigeria must take “decisive and coordinated steps” to prevent further attacks and strengthen security around vulnerable learning institutions. The statement also pressed the government to ensure the safe return of all abducted students, warning that the continuous targeting of schools could undermine long-term development in the region.
Security analysts believe the U.S. offer could enhance Nigeria’s counter-terrorism operations, especially in rural areas where surveillance capabilities remain weak. Many observers, however, argue that real progress will only come if Nigeria addresses internal gaps, including delayed response times, poor intelligence sharing among agencies, and inadequate protection in remote communities.
Meanwhile, the federal government says it is reviewing the incidents and working with military and intelligence operatives to locate the abductors. While vows of action continue, families of the missing students remain in distress, pleading for immediate rescue efforts before the situation worsens.
The latest abductions add to a troubling list of school kidnappings in northern Nigeria, fueling renewed calls for reforms, improved community policing, and tougher measures against armed groups terrorizing rural regions.
