“African Queen Became a Problem for Me” – 2Face Idibia Opens Up on Fame and Challenges
Nigerian music icon 2Face Idibia opens up about how his hit song African Queen became both a blessing and a problem, revealing the pressures of fame and expectations from fans.

Legendary Nigerian singer 2Face Idibia has revealed how his timeless hit song, “African Queen,” which brought him global fame, also became a source of personal struggle over the years.
Speaking in a recent interview, the award-winning musician admitted that while the song changed his life and defined his career, it also came with challenges he didn’t expect. According to 2Face, the massive attention and emotional attachment people had to African Queen sometimes created unrealistic expectations and personal pressure.
“At a point, African Queen became like a blessing and a burden,” he said. “People always wanted me to recreate that same magic, and when I tried something different, they’d say I’ve lost my sound. It’s not easy living under that kind of comparison.”
The track, released in 2004 under his debut solo album Face 2 Face, remains one of the biggest love songs ever produced in Africa, earning 2Face multiple awards and cementing his place as a pioneer of contemporary Afrobeats.
Despite the challenges, 2Face (also known as 2Baba) expressed gratitude to fans who have supported him throughout his long career. He added that he’s focused on making meaningful music rather than chasing hits.
“I’ve learned to make music for the soul. I appreciate everyone who still connects with me after all these years,” he said.
The legendary artist’s revelation has sparked reactions among fans who believe African Queen will forever remain a cultural masterpiece that can’t be replicated.
