FG Clarifies: Mathematics Still Compulsory for SSCE Despite Admission Policy Review

The Federal Government has reaffirmed that Mathematics remains a compulsory subject for all candidates sitting for the Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE), despite the recent review of tertiary admission requirements.
The clarification follows public debate over reports suggesting that arts students no longer need a credit in Mathematics to gain admission into higher institutions.
In a statement released by the Federal Ministry of Education’s spokesperson, Boriowo Folasade, the ministry explained that while the new policy introduces flexibility in admission criteria for certain programmes, it does not exempt students from studying or sitting for Mathematics in the SSCE.
“The Federal Ministry of Education reaffirms that all students must continue to register and sit for English Language and Mathematics during their O-Level examinations,” the statement read.

According to the ministry, the revised policy only affects admission requirements for some courses, ensuring that capable students are not denied access to tertiary education due to credit deficiencies in subjects not directly related to their chosen fields.
The statement further emphasized that English Language and Mathematics remain foundational subjects for communication, reasoning, and lifelong learning.
“All students must continue to take both subjects as part of their SSCE, as they remain vital to building a sound educational foundation,” it added.
The government maintained that the move aligns with global best practices, creating a more inclusive pathway for students while upholding essential academic standards.
