CAN warns no politician should be treated as the Messiah before 2027 elections

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has declared that no politician should be regarded as the Messiah ahead of the general elections.

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has issued a statement asserting that no political figure should be regarded as the Messiah as the country prepares for the 2027 general elections. Archbishop Daniel Okoh, president of CAN, directed the caution toward Precious Oruche, known as Mama Pee, and other political players, urging them not to invoke Jesus Christ in partisan disputes.

The admonition came after Mama Pee made remarks that referenced Jesus while commenting on Peter Obi and the upcoming 2027 presidential race. CAN said her comments illustrate why Christians must keep their political preferences separate from their reverence for Christ.

In its statement, CAN emphasized that Jesus is not a candidate, campaign slogan, or tool for political rivalry. Archbishop Okoh added that Nigerians are free to back or criticize any candidate—whether Peter Obi, Atiku Abubakar, Bola Tinubu, or others—without conflating their faith with political support.
