African Union Suspends Guinea-Bissau Following Political Turmoil
The African Union has suspended Guinea-Bissau over escalating political instability, following a failed coup attempt and rising tensions within the country’s leadership.

The African Union (AU) has officially suspended Guinea-Bissau from all its activities following renewed political instability and a recent surge in tensions within the country’s leadership structure.
The suspension comes after a reported attempt to overthrow the government, prompting widespread concern across the West African sub-region. According to the AU Peace and Security Council, the decision was taken to allow Guinea-Bissau’s leadership to restore constitutional order, ensure the safety of citizens, and address the root causes of the political unrest.
The AU emphasized that unconstitutional changes of government remain unacceptable and warned that it will not hesitate to impose further sanctions if the situation deteriorates.
This latest development also puts additional pressure on ECOWAS, which has been working to stabilize politically troubled nations in the region. Guinea-Bissau has experienced multiple coups and attempted coups over the last two decades, making it one of West Africa’s most politically fragile countries.
Regional analysts say the AU’s suspension is a strong signal aimed at discouraging further disruption to the democratic process, especially at a time when several African nations are grappling with leadership instability, military interference, and governance crises.
Meanwhile, international observers continue to monitor the situation as diplomatic negotiations are expected to intensify in the coming days.
