Tinubu Declares Nationwide Security Emergency Amid Surge in Violence
Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu has declared a nationwide security emergency, ordering mass recruitment of police and military, and deploying forest guards — a major move in response to rising kidnappings, violence, and regional instability.

Federal Government of Nigeria, under President Bola Tinubu, on Wednesday declared a nationwide security emergency, following a spike in violent attacks, kidnappings, and insecurity across many states.
In a broadcasted address, Tinubu ordered a major overhaul of the country’s security apparatus — mandating fresh recruitment into the military and police forces and authorizing enhanced deployment of security personnel to high-risk regions.
What’s Included in the Emergency Measures
- The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) will recruit an additional 20,000 officers — increasing the planned strength to 50,000.
- The government granted permission for the use of various National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) camps as temporary training depots to expedite the training process for new recruits.
- All police officers withdrawn from VIP-protection duties will undergo expedited retraining (“crash training”) before redeployment to conflict-prone zones.
- The Department of State Services (DSS) has been authorized to immediately deploy trained forest guards to flush out bandits, terrorists, and militant groups hiding in forests across the nation — and recruit additional personnel for this purposed task.
Why the Emergency was Declared
The nationwide emergency declaration comes in response to a surge of violent crimes — including mass kidnappings, attacks on schools and churches, and banditry — which have claimed many lives and destabilized communities across different states.
The President emphasized that the current situation requires “boots on the ground,” calling on all Nigerians to remain calm, vigilant and to assist security agencies by reporting suspicious movements.
He also appealed to state governments and lawmakers to fast-track legal reforms that would allow willing states to establish their own state police forces — to strengthen local security capacities alongside federal efforts.
What This Means for Nigerians
The nationwide security emergency aims to restore stability and reassure the public that the government is taking decisive steps to tackle insecurity. The increase in security personnel, strategic redeployments, and broader legal reforms may help reduce attacks if successfully implemented.
However, many Nigerians are watching closely to see how effectively these measures will be enforced, given the history of security challenges, especially in remote or rural communities.
