Over 30 Feared Dead, 40 Injured in Niger State Tanker Explosion

Over 30 people have been confirmed dead and 40 others injured after a petrol tanker exploded along Bida–Lapai Road in Niger State. Officials blame brake failure and poor road conditions for the tragic fire outbreak.
Tragedy struck in Niger State as a fuel tanker explosion claimed the lives of over 30 people and left about 40 others severely injured on Monday. The incident occurred along the busy Bida–Lapai road, sending shockwaves across the state.
According to eyewitnesses, the tanker—reportedly loaded with premium motor spirit (petrol)—lost control after a brake failure, ramming into several vehicles and roadside traders before bursting into flames. The inferno quickly spread, engulfing nearby shops, motorcycles, and pedestrians caught in the chaos.
Rescue officials from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) arrived at the scene to evacuate victims and contain the fire. Emergency responders reported that several bodies were burnt beyond recognition, while others sustained varying degrees of burns.
Speaking to journalists, an FRSC official confirmed that over 30 people were feared dead and about 40 sustained injuries. He added that efforts were ongoing to identify the deceased and contact their families.
Residents have called on the government to improve road safety enforcement and ensure that trucks carrying inflammable products adhere to maintenance standards to prevent future tragedies.
Governor Mohammed Umar Bago expressed deep sorrow over the incident and ordered an immediate investigation. He also directed hospitals in the area to provide free medical treatment to the injured victims.
The tragic explosion has reignited public concern over the increasing number of tanker accidents across Nigeria, often linked to poor road conditions, over-speeding, and lack of proper vehicle maintenance.
