According to reports, the accused were arrested during the #FreeNnamdiKanu protest held at the Federal High Court premises in Abuja on Monday. The demonstration called for the immediate release of Kanu, who has been in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) since 2021.

The police charged Ejimakor and the 11 others with unlawful assembly, public disturbance, and conduct likely to cause a breach of peace under the Penal Code. They all pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Ejimakor, known for being one of the leading legal representatives of the IPOB leader, described the charges as “politically motivated” and a violation of the constitutional right to peaceful protest.

He stated that the group was only expressing its demand for justice and the enforcement of Kanu’s human rights as guaranteed under the Nigerian constitution.

Meanwhile, the court granted the accused persons bail in liberal terms, with the next hearing adjourned to November 15, 2025.

The arrest and arraignment have sparked mixed reactions among Nigerians, with many activists and human rights groups calling for calm and the respect of civil liberties.
