JUST-IN: Police Fire Teargas at #FreeNnamdiKanuNow Protesters in Abuja

A viral video has sparked outrage onThe protest, tagged #FreeNnamdiKanuNow, was held in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) on Monday and organised by human rights activist Omoyele Sowore, who had earlier announced October 20 as a day of action for Kanu’s freedom.
Background: The Ongoing Detention
Nnamdi Kanu has been in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) since his arrest and controversial extradition from Kenya in 2021.
Despite a Court of Appeal ruling ordering his release, the Federal Government has continued to hold him, citing national security concerns.
Rights groups and supporters have repeatedly condemned his detention as unlawful and politically motivated, with Sowore and other activists now pushing for a nationwide campaign to compel the authorities to respect the court’s decision.
Chaos Erupts as Police Move In
According to videos circulating online, the protest started peacefully before escalating into chaos.
Sowore, Kanu’s lawyer Aloy Ejimakor, and several supporters were seen chanting “Free Nnamdi Kanu now!” as officers advanced toward the crowd.
Moments later, Sowore was heard shouting, “Don’t teargas us!” before police allegedly launched teargas canisters, sending protesters and bystanders scrambling for safety.
Eyewitnesses accused security operatives of using excessive force despite the nonviolent nature of the gathering. As of press time, it remains unclear whether any arrests or injuries occurred.
🗣️ Outrage and Renewed Calls for Justice
The incident has triggered widespread condemnation across social media, with many Nigerians accusing authorities of suppressing peaceful dissent.
Activists have vowed to continue mobilising until the government releases Nnamdi Kanu in compliance with existing court orders.
