As Nigeria marks its 65th Independence anniversary, Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State has called for unwavering respect for the rule of law and a push toward true federalism. In a statement signed by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, Adeleke described October 1 as a time for reflection on the nation’s constitutional democracy and governance.
He emphasized the need for judicial processes to remain the cornerstone of all democratic interactions, stating, _“We must ensure compliance with the rule of law, not rule of the thumb. This is the only legitimate way to regulate relationships in our democracy and among Nigerians.”_
Adeleke also highlighted the importance of true federalism, advocating for clearer constitutional guidelines and greater devolution of powers and resources to strengthen federating units. He urged politicians to prioritize reforms that would fast-track development across all levels of government.
While acknowledging Nigeria’s progress since independence, Adeleke noted that the country can achieve more by safeguarding its democratic foundations and ensuring the judiciary’s independence. He reassured Osun residents of his administration’s commitment to upholding democratic principles, pledging to remain guided by the constitution in delivering governance and protecting citizens’ interests.
The governor concluded by congratulating Nigerians at home and abroad, expressing optimism for a brighter future as the nation continues its democratic journey.
