The Federal Government has revealed that this year’s Independence Day celebrations will be modest and focused on reflection rather than grandeur. Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, shared that the theme for Nigeria’s 65th anniversary is _“All Hands on Deck for a Greater Nation.”_
The events kicked off with Jumu’ah prayers on Friday and a Thanksgiving service on Sunday. Other activities include the unveiling of the _National Value Charter_ by the National Orientation Agency (NOA) and a National Students’ Debate, aimed at fostering conversations about unity, leadership, and responsible citizenship.
The _National Value Charter_ is a framework promoting national pride and shared responsibility. It’s divided into two sections: the _Nigerian Promise_, which outlines the government’s commitment to values like equality, democracy, and inclusivity, and the _Citizens’ Commitment_, which emphasizes individual responsibilities such as discipline, tolerance, and accountability.
The scaled-back approach reflects a focus on introspection and nation-building, with the government using the opportunity to call for unity and collective effort in shaping Nigeria’s future.
