FG Denies Signing Agreement with ASUU, Calls It a Draft
The Federal Government has dismissed claims that it signed a binding agreement with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). According to the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, the documents often referenced by ASUU are merely drafts from past negotiations, not formal agreements.
During a press briefing in Abuja, Alausa clarified that while discussions have been ongoing, no official agreement was ever signed. He emphasized that President Bola Tinubu’s administration is committed to resolving the issues raised by ASUU, but the government wants a solution that is both actionable and sustainable.
Alausa further explained that a technical team is currently reviewing ASUU’s proposals, with plans to present a clean, implementable report to the Yayale Ahmed-led committee for renegotiation of the long-standing 2009 agreement. The government also assured Nigerians that it will keep schools open and avoid another strike by engaging ASUU continuously and constructively.
